The Caribbean island of Aruba is preparing to reopen to international visitors sometime next month.
Aruba’s Minister of Tourism announced tentative plans to reopen Aruba’s borders and mentioned that this could be planned for some time between June 15 and July 1st.
“As you can imagine, this decision does not come without serious consideration as our highest priority is the health and well-being of our people and visitors,” the Aruba Tourism Authority said. “For travelers who already have a trip booked and are concerned restrictions may impact your travel dates, please contact your hotels and airlines directly for an update on their rescheduling policies. We will welcome guests back to our sunny shores as soon as it is safe to do so.”
The Aruba Airport Authority says it has begun preparing for a “possible” restart, although they are still waiting for a definite date from the government to reopen the island to international travelers. The restart plan by Aruba's Airport includes 4 stages: the “pre-restart phase,” the “soft-restart phase” the “close-to-normal operation” phase and the “business as usual phase.” The updated information from the government is expected in the next week or two. No exact date for reopening borders has been set as yet, with plans being tentative so far.
As of May 13, Aruba has reported only 5 active COVID-19 cases with no new cases recorded in the last few days. Aruba has been closed to overseas arrivals since March 16, shortly after the island nation recorded its first cases of coronavirus.
The government has implemented strict lockdown measures for residents which helped to contain the virus.
