The popular Mexico travel destinations plan to reopen to international tourists at the beginning of June, according to a report.
The proposal to reopen the Quintana Roo state, which includes Cancun, Tulum, Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, and more, coincides with the start of air travel to the region, according to Riviera Maya News.
Some airlines that have announced they’ll resume flights to the Cancun International Airport in early June are Southwest, Delta and Air Canada.
In conjunction with the secretary of health, Mexico’s secretary of tourism released protocol for the hospitality industry to clean hotels and help visitors feel safe while COVID-19 remains a threat. Among those recommending enhanced practices:
Surfaces should be cleaned with a cloth or towel soaked with water with detergent, to avoid dispersing any dust.
Horizontal surfaces including tables, chairs, beds, shelves, or other installations attached to the wall should be cleaned with a cloth with detergent water, rinsed with clean water, and disinfected with chlorinated solution.
The walls, windows, and doors (including the handles) should be cleaned regularly, in addition to when they are visibly dirty.
Cancun announced an aggressive new campaign to bring visitors back to the region. The Hotel Association of Cancún, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres (AHCP), in anticipation of a reopening of tourism on June 1, announced the “Come 2 Cancún” campaign to attract visitors with two-for-one hotel stays.
Other destinations in the state could soon follow, pending approval by the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council (CPTQ).
More than 150 hoteliers, including representatives from Acotur, Sunset Group, Ritz Carlton hotels, Fiesta Americana Coral Beach, AM Resorts, Hilton, Quinta Real, back the digital campaign, which will also include contests on social media where winners will receive free trips to the area.
Mexico isn't the only one aiming to resume tourism. Greece has recently announced it expects to open its borders by July, Iceland said it will start welcoming tourists on June 15, Aruba expects to open by July.
