Overseas tourists who were planning their summer vacation in Spain this year may not have to cancel their plans, as the country is planning to open its borders to international tourists from July. “From now, foreign tourists can plan their vacations in our country," Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Saturday.
" We will guarantee that tourists will not run any risks and they will not bring us any risks,” the Spanish leader said. “ There will be no opposing forces between health and business. Spanish tourism will now have two hallmarks: environmental sustainability and health safety.”
He also noted that Spain’s top-flight soccer league, La Liga, will restart games next month as well.
Spain has been the fourth worst-hit countries in the world and the worst-hit EU country by the Coronavirus crisis, with 282,370 infections, 28,678 deaths, and 196,958 recovered.
The Spanish government has introduced some of the strictest Coronavirus lockdown measures in order to keep the pandemic under control. Restrictions on movement are being gradually eased. Restaurants and bars in some parts of the country already being allowed to open their terraces, and museums and churches reopening.
Many airlines start resuming flights and adding more destinations in July. Nearly all of Europe’s low-cost carriers like Ryanair, EeasyJet, Jet2, and Eurowings rely on the summer travel season for a large part of their earnings.
As summer season approaches, many countries are trying to figure out how to revive the travel industry. Greece has recently announced it expects to open its borders by July, Iceland said it will start welcoming tourists on June 15, Aruba expects to open by July.
